Located in the heart of Pukekohe at 63 Princes Street, Bonanza Bar Takeaways is a beloved fish and chips takeaway that perfectly captures the essence of classic Kiwi seafood dining with a delightful twist. This local gem has earned its reputation for serving some of the crispiest, freshest fish and chips in town, drawing both locals and visitors alike who crave authentic, flavorful, and generously portioned meals.
Bonanza Bar Takeaways offers an enticing variety on their menu, making every visit an exciting culinary adventure. Their specialties like the Paua Fritters at NZ$7.00 and the Chicken Cutlet or Pork Schnitzel at NZ$4.00, showcase their range beyond just seafood, catering to diverse tastes. Not to be missed are the crunchy Squid Rings and the invariably fresh Oysters and Mussels – perfect for those wanting a taste of the sea’s best.
For a comforting snack or quick bite, their toasties menu is equally satisfying. Whether you fancy a simple Cheese & Onion toastie or something more hearty like the Steak, Egg & Mushroom, each item is prepared with care and packed full of flavor. The Bonanza Specials such as Kumara Chips for NZ$5.00 bring a uniquely New Zealand touch to the classic chip experience, combining sweetness and perfect crispiness that leaves you wanting more.
One of the defining charms of Bonanza Bar Takeaways lies in their fry bread and raw fish offerings, regarded by many as unmatched in the region. As customer Amber Thompson remarked, these items attract a loyal following fast, so being prompt ensures you don’t miss out. The fried bread alone is noted repeatedly for its warm, soft texture with just the right balance of crunch—the kind of treat that transports you immediately to traditional local flavors.
The dining atmosphere, while primarily takeaway-focused, radiates warmth and a strong sense of whanau (family). Customers often comment on the friendly, personable service, recounting moments where the staff, often a mother-daughter duo, make you feel valued and welcomed right from the moment you step in. Roxane Leppan sums it up best, praising the “sweet customer service” and easy parking that makes each visit smooth and enjoyable.
Freshness is a consistent theme in the feedback, with multiple reviews highlighting the light, fluffy batter enveloping the fish and scollops, and the impeccably white fish meat inside that never disappoints. The Snapper burger is another crowd-pleaser, balanced perfectly with refreshing salad and a flavorful sauce that complements rather than overwhelms.
Bonanza Bar Takeaways isn’t just about good food; it’s about creating memorable moments with food made lovingly by a whanau. Whether you’re craving classic fish and chips, seeking a unique tapa-style seafood pick, or simply want to indulge in a warm, freshly made donut reminiscent of a 'lil orbits', Bonanza has you covered.
For anyone in Pukekohe or passing through, Bonanza Bar Takeaways is a must-visit destination for a genuinely authentic taste of New Zealand’s seafood heritage, coupled with friendly smiles, generous portions, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit feel like coming home.

So good! Chips are crispy and cooked to perfection. There are heaps of specials available ranging from $8 - $30. The prices are good. Scoop sizes are decent for the price. They have Fry bread, raw fish, seafood chowder and mussels, but you have to be in quick for the fry bread and raw fish. And the donuts taste just like 'lil orbits'. Definitely recommend

Snapper burger was super yummy with a good amount of sauce, well balanced salad & again the fish so fresh and well battered. Actual flavourful food. Really sweet customer service, feels warm and friendly. Easy as to park up right outside. Keen to keep supporting this business:)

Ordered $9 meal, fish, calamari, potato fritter and chips. Calamari melts in your mouth. Fish perfect. I'm not a chip fan, but it could be more crispy for me. Potato fritter was pretty thin. I'll take one star off the service. Ask your clients how much salt they want. I asked for salt and vinegar for a reason. None the less the staff were very friendly. Mom and daughter cooking up a storm. Young man doing the dishes was probably also a family member. I'll probably be back, and ask for more salt and vinegar next time. Locals serving the locals

First time there and it was great. Warm mihi when I walked in the door. Fish pack was awesome with a great steam pudding to boot. I'll be back This place is my go to for fish n chips. The other week I seen that they sell fried bread and i must say that this is the best that I've ever tasted. If you like fried bread head into Bonanza and get yourself some, you will not be disappointed. They are so soft cold and when you get home, bang a piece in the microwave for 30secs and boom
